Christmas Celebration

“Joy to the World! The Lord is Come! Let earth receive her King!”

Fred Jordan Missions’ Annual Christmas Celebrations bring the glory of the Christ Child to the streets of Skid Row for upwards of 20,000 impoverished children and their mothers who live in filthy welfare hotels, in dangerous government projects, or worse.

Beautiful Christmas carols ring throughout the streets and alleys of Skid Row, while thousands of wide-eyed little children listen to the breathtaking details of that first Christmas: angels and shepherds – wise men and kings – Joseph and Mary – the holy Child, Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger – and a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse always show up to greet the nearly-breathless children, and introduce Santa Claus, who leads long lines of excited little ones to dozens of tables groaning under the weight of more than 50,000 new toys that are distributed, as well as warm clothing and new blankets. And Christmas dinner food bags are given to all the mothers with everything needed to prepare Christmas dinner in their modest little dwellings.

A holiday filled with happiness may seem impossible on the streets of Skid Row, yet each year since 1944, Fred Jordan Mission has brought joy, hope and a bit of the peace of the Bethlehem manger to thousands of inner-city children and their families.
