How could you be thankful if you lived in a cardboard box on Skid Row?

Thanksgiving Day on Skid Row bears no resemblance to the holiday most Americans enjoy. Instead of a table piled high with turkey and dressing and all the trimmings, most here on Skid Row will have no table at all.

Instead of a soft chair near a crackling fireplace, many will warm themselves near a small bonfire in an empty lot. Or with outstretched hands over a 50-gallon oil drum filled with burning trash.

And instead of laughter with family and friends, their closest companions will be the cold, their loneliness, and their almost constant despair.

This is why Fred Jordan Mission’s Annual Street Banquets are legendary, as God’s blessings and His bounty are shared with poor, homeless families on Skid Row.

Tables and chairs are set up out in the middle of Fifth Street, Fred Jordan felt that the poor and forgotten people on America’s streets deserved the very best musicians and guest speakers, and that tradition stands today.

Thanksgiving on the streets begins with praise and worship provided by outstanding musicians, followed by a simple presentation of the gospel.

And then - - DINNER IS SERVED. Hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers serve a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings to thousands of hungry Americans seated at tables and chairs out in the middle of Fifth Street.

YOU can give hungry, homeless Americans something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!
