A Servant Walked on the Moon
From the beginning of time until now, only twelve men have placed their feet on the moon. Colonel James B. Irwin was one of those men.
Little Jimmy Irwin often pointed to the moon and told anyone who would listen that someday he would travel there. His dream came true on August 7, 1971, with his historic flight to the moon as a member of the Apollo 15 crew that made the successful moon walk. Irwin was the eighth person to walk on the moon.
Colonel Irwin spoke of the privilege of being a member of that unique crew, the thrill of leaving planet earth and seeing it shrink in size. He realized that because of his unique mission, many would consider him a “superstar,”, a celebrity.
He wrote about the importance of his NASA experience to his Christianity:
“I am now more than an earthling, because I have walked on the moon. Being on the moon had a profound spiritual impact upon my life. Before I entered space with the Apollo 15 mission, I was…(a) silent Christian, but I feel the Lord sent me to the moon so I could return to the earth and share His Son, Jesus Christ.”
Humbled by the awesome goodness of God, Colonel Irwin went on to say:
“As I was returning to Earth, I realized that I was a servant – not a celebrity. So here I am, as God’s servant on planet Earth to share what I have experienced, so that others might know the glory of God.”
God allowed Colonel Irwin to discover a basic truth: We are called to be His servants. And Irwin summed up his feelings with these words, “True heroes are human beings that sacrifice themselves for a greater purpose other than their own pursuits of ease and comfort.”
Friend, you and I will never walk on the moon, but we can take heed to Colonel James Irwin’s words - - To be a true hero, we must sacrifice ourselves for others. And never forget that we are called to be God’s servants.
Please join us here at the Mission, where every day we are learning to be servants of Jesus Christ, by serving the poor in His Name. Or make a donation to share God’s love, and send other volunteer servants - - Phone 1-844-FJM-FOOD. Or donate through our secure website, fjm.org.
