Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act,” said Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor during World War II.

Like John the Baptist pointed out the sins of Herod, Bonhoeffer pointed out the sins of Adolf Hitler. He was convinced that Christ and Hitler were totally in opposition to each other.

He joined the Christian underground against Hitler and was soon imprisoned. While awaiting his execution, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote: “When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die.”

He never counted the cost of his opposition to Hitler. He followed Christ to his death. Likewise, Jesus of Nazareth never counted the cost of following His Father’s will to his death on the cross.

Bonhoeffer’s life challenges all those who want Christ’s salvation, but don’t want to bear a cross. The life of discipleship was not intended to be easy. Jesus clearly said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

These are the requirements to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, just as God the Father had requirements for His Only begotten Son. Dare we expect less?
