I Shall Return
Perhaps you old enough to remember one of the most important promises ever made: “I shall return.”
Douglas MacArthur was an American five-star general, and field marshal of the Philippine Army. When he was forced to evacuate the Philippines with his U.S. forces after the Japanese invaded the islands in March, 1942, he promised the Filipino people, "I SHALL RETURN."
MacArthur became Supreme Commander of our forces in the Southwest Pacific, and after more than two years of fighting, he fulfilled his famous promise. He returned to the Philippines in October, 1944, and announced, "I have returned! By the grace of Almighty God."
God’s Word is filled with promises that are even stronger than MacArthur’s. I love God’s promise in Joshua: “Be strong and very courageous. Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
God always keeps His Word. God’s faithfulness is the strongest truth of the Old Testament. God promised Abraham & Sarah they would be the parents of a mighty nation. He promised that the world would blessed through them. God was faithful to keep His promise!
God's people were slaves in Egypt, and God called Moses to lead His people out of bondage. God was faithful to keep His promise. General Douglas MacArthur kept his promise to return to the Philippines, but our God is even more faithful, and when God promises, He always follows through.
The Psalmist wrote, "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me...." Friend, God never promised to keep us from pain, heartache, or tragedy in life. But God promised to be with us through the tragedy, the heartache and the pain.
