Monica Part 4
“I don’t want to feed my baby out’ the garbage no more! I don’t want to feed him out’ the garbage no more,” Monica sobbed, as she told me why she came downtown to give her baby away.
What do you tell a mother whose life has been nothing but tragedy? I had no words, so I did the one thing that comes naturally: I just held Monica in my arms and rocked her like a baby. I prayed for her as she cried and cried.
When she caught her breath, she told me that her own mother had been a hooker who taught her to be a prostitute. Her mother put out to work the streets before she was a teenager in order to feed her own little brothers. The last time she saw her mother was when she walked out of a courtroom, after telling the judge that she didn’t want her daughter.
The man she thought was her father denied her, shot her up with drugs, and put her back on the streets as a hooker. Finally one of her customers said he would rescue her, so she married him. But he put her back on the streets to work for him while she was pregnant with his baby.
Monica’s life isn't your average "middle-America, “mom and apple pie" kind of mother. And if you're shocked and horrified, you can imagine how it tore my heart out to sit and talk with Monica, as she shared her story with me.
Please help me help women here on these streets. Help us share Jesus, the Bread of Life for the soul, and help us share bread, the staff of life for the body.
Blessings,
Willie Jordan
