Sharing the Gospel is Verbal

During a war, an Army Chaplain was visiting wounded soldiers in a hospital. He offered to read the Bible to one young soldier, but the soldier said, "I'm cold," so the chaplain took off his own coat and wrapped it around the young man.

The soldier then asked for something to drink, and the chaplain propped up the soldier's head and held his own water canteen to the young man's lips.

When the chaplain asked the young man again if he could read from the Bible, the soldier replied, "If there’s anything in the Bible that caused you to do what you've done for me, yes! Read me that part.”

Here at Fred Jordan Mission we believe that sharing the gospel verbally, must go hand-in-hand with our actions of mercy.

The Mission’s founder, my late husband, Fred Jordan, often said that people didn’t come to the Mission to hear him preach. They were hungry, and they came to eat. But Fred always pointed out that here at the Mission, we would share God’s love by preaching the gospel to our homeless friends, first, and then we would show God’s love by feeding them.

Proclaiming the gospel is inherently verbal. Serving a plate of food to a hungry person does not explain the plan of salvation. And giving a blanket to someone who is cold can never explain Christ’s death on the cross, His burial and His resurrection.

Here at the Mission we believe our first responsibility is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, verbally, and then we feed hungry people and help meet physical needs.
