The King of Kings Became a Servant

Jesus never said, “I am a servant,” but there can be no mistake about what He meant when He said, “Here I am among you like a servant.” In our celebrity-driven culture, how many of us want to become a servant?

Jesus knew what it meant to be a servant. The prophet Isaiah described Him in these words: He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, and we esteemed Him not. He has borne our griefs, carried our sorrows; smitten by God, stricken by Him, afflicted. Wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities; He took the punishment that made us whole, and by His stripes we are healed.

We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost. We’ve all gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins on Him. He was beaten, He was tortured, but like a lamb being slaughtered, He took it all in silence.

The cross of Christ is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. The suffering servant went to the cross, where the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was slaughtered like a lamb, that the blood of the Lamb of God might be put on your doorpost, and mine.

Pioneer missionary to Africa, Albert Schweitzer said, "I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know. The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."
