Three Trees

The old children’s story tells about three trees in the forest that were talking about their dreams for the future. In a moment, we will listen to the trees.

The first tree wanted to be made into a cradle, to hold a tiny new baby. The second tree wanted to become a big ship, carrying important people to faraway lands. The third tree wanted to stand tall, pointing heavenward, reminding everyone that there is a God who loves them.

But then one day the woodcutters came and chopped down the three trees, ignoring their dreams for their future. The first tree was made into a manger, a feeding trough for animals. The manger was sold to a man in Bethlehem, and on the night Jesus was born, that simple feeding trough became the cradle for the Christ Child.

The second tree was made into an inexpensive fishing boat, and bought by a man named Simon Peter. And on a warm afternoon when the crowds pressed in, Jesus Himself climbed aboard that small fishing boat and preached good news to the multitudes.

The third tree was shaped into an instrument of torture, a cross. But it was on that cross that Jesus was crucified, transforming a symbol of cruelty into a powerful reminder that God loved the world so much that He gave His Only Son to provide salvation for all who would believe, and receive Him.

I don’t know about you, but every day I ask the Lord to use me for His glory, and not mine. That’s when He can do great things through us and for us--greater than we can ever imagine.
