Wrong Values?

Michael Josephson, former Los Angeles law professor and ethicist said, "I have come to the conclusion that it is not a matter of parents not teaching values. They're teaching values. They're just teaching the wrong values."

How do parents teach wrong values, you might ask? Simple - - By not teaching the right values. Far too often, parents allow their attitudes and their lives to be the tutor for their children, and in doing this, they pass on to their children all their own bad habits and bad traits. And even worse, they allow societal values to control their own lives, and their children follow in their footsteps.

Proverbs is an excellent textbook on parenting. Chapter One, in The Message Bible, reads like this: “These are the wise sayings of Solomon, David’s son, Israel’s king—Written down so we’ll know how to live well and right, to understand what life means and where it’s going;

A manual for living, for learning what’s right and just and fair; To teach the inexperienced the ropes and give our young people a grasp on reality.”

How can we be good parents? How can we guide our children well? It’s simple. Verse 7 says, “Start with God – the first step in learning is bowing down to God.”

“Start with God.” This is step one in being a good parent. Put God at the center of our lives. Recognize God’s majesty, Honor Him. Bow down to His authority in our lives. Turn from our sin, and receive His Son, Jesus Christ, as our Savior.

How can we be great parents? Follow God’s Word as the guidebook for our lives, and the lives of our children. Start with the Proverbs. It is “A manual for living, for learning what’s right and just and fair; To teach the inexperienced the ropes and give our young people a grasp on reality.”

This is why we teach God’s Word here at Fred Jordan Mission here on Skid Row. People on these streets, like people everywhere, have followed other books, other philosophies, other religions, and their lives turned out to be a disaster.

We would also like to help you find God’s Son, Jesus. In Him, you’ll find forgiveness for your past, peace for today, and the assurance of heaven in your future.

When you contact us, we would be grateful for your help to share God’s love with homeless people.

Blessings,

Willie Jordan (Mrs. Fred Jordan)
