Are You a Role Model?

I talked with a woman here on the streets of Skid Row. Her father, who was her role model, was an alcoholic and she became an alcoholic, following his example. He didn’t have to ‘teach’ her how to be an alcoholic, he modeled it before her, and she ‘caught’ the message. Or as we often hear, “Children learn more from what is ‘caught,’ than from what is ‘taught.’

I believe the primary goal of all Christian parents should be to leave a godly legacy for your children. The godliness of your children is ultimately in the hands of the Holy Spirit, but God uses your influence to make a great impact on your children.

Listen to this history of two men: One man, Max Jukes lived in New York. He didn’t believe in God, lived a godless life, married an ungodly girl. Max Jukes’ descendants included: 7 murderers, 60 thieves, 130 other convicts, 100 were drunkards, and more than half the women were prostitutes, and 310 died as paupers.

The second man was the great Puritan preacher, Jonathan Edwards. He lived at the same time as Max Jukes, in the same state, but he married Sarah, a godly girl. He loved the Lord, and taught his children God’s Word. Jonathan Edwards’ godly legacy includes: 1 U.S. Vice-President, 3 U.S. Senators, 3 state governors, 3 city mayors, 13 university presidents, 30 judges, 65 professors, 80 public office holders, 100 lawyers and 100 foreign missionaries.

These men are powerful examples of the influence a father has on his children, for good, or for evil. The woman I talked with on the street didn’t stand a chance in life, with a drunkard for a father. Please help me introduce our loving Father God to fatherless men and women on these streets.
