Everyone Needs Compassion

The streets of Skid Row here in Los Angeles look like a shanty-town. Some people sleep in ragged tents, some on wooden packing crates, and others live right on the cold, hard sidewalks.

When I see the misery on the streets, I recall my first visit to Korea more than 60 years ago, after the close of the Korean War. My heart broke when I saw children starving in the streets, and when I shared my heart with another American, he said casually, “You’ll get used to it soon, and then the hunger and suffering won’t bother you.”

I quickly answered, “I hope I NEVER get used to the suffering of others! I hope I never lose my compassion!”

I plead with you today, never, ever “get used to” the suffering of lost, hungry, homeless people. Because without you, who would tell them about God’s love, His forgiveness and His salvation. And without you, who would feed them, and care for them?

When my late husband, Fred opened the Mission doors in 1944, he welcomed all the precious souls on these streets: drunks, prostitutes, ex-convicts, drug addicts - - and even worse. He knew they needed God’s forgiveness, His salvation, His compassion.

Everyone needs compassion. And no one needs God’s love more than my friends here on these filthy, dangerous streets that have been rejected by family, and ignored by society – especially on holidays.

Please, I urgently need your help to feed hungry people this Thanksgiving season.

Please use a credit card, or use EFT when you donate online, www.fjm.org. Or mail your tax-deductible check to me here at the Mission, Willie Jordan, PO BOX 12345, Covina, CA 91722. Thank you!
