How I Learned to Pray

“Groanings which cannot be uttered are often prayers which cannot be refused,” said Charles Spurgeon. I have learned the truth of this statement during times of great personal pain.

I came to faith in Christ as a young child. I felt God’s call upon my life as a teen, and I have had the honor and the joy of sharing the Gospel, and serving the poor in Africa, Asia, and Latin America for nearly 70 years. I have seen God transform countless hearts and restore shattered lives. I know God answers prayer.

In my own personal life, I’ve come to see that in the times of my deepest need, God’s awesome power is unleashed through prayer. When the Lord took my dear husband, Fred, I thought I couldn’t live another day, yet I had our seven children, and the responsibility for the Mission here on Skid Row, several foreign missions, our weekly television programs, our daily Take Three radio, and the list goes on.

Fred and I had always worked side-by-side in this ministry, but he was definitely the leader. It was easy to lean on his leadership. Now he was gone, and I was alone, without his wisdom, his guidance, and his limitless faith to believe God would meet all the needs of all the people here on the streets, and around the world who look to us for their “daily bread.” I think that’s when I really learned to pray!

I have set aside the last Tuesday of this month as a Day of Prayer, and my family and my dedicated staff will join me to pray for you, your loved ones, and any concerns you would care to share. Mail your prayer requests to me, Willie Jordan, PO BOX 12345, Covina, CA 91722. Or go to our website, fjm.org/prayer.

Blessings,
