Only One Thing is Necessary

Jesus said, “Martha, Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is necessary, and Mary has chosen it.” Luke 10:41-42 (MSG)

Jesus was visiting the house of Martha, and her sister, Mary, who sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to His teaching. Martha was busy serving Jesus, and she finally asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her.

And we can almost hear tenderness in Jesus’ voice when he scolded her and said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried about so many things, but one thing only is necessary…”

Does this contradict His command for us to GO? Isn’t “DO-ing” the whole point of following Christ? Isn’t Martha taking what Jesus teaches and putting it into practice? Which is better: to sit at Jesus’ feet and hear His exhortations to service, or to go out actively and serve? Is it service or worship?

I believe that only when we hunger and thirst to know Him and His righteousness, are we then ready to go out and serve a lost world. Service is absolutely essential if we are going to win the lost, but friend, never neglect to worship the One who saved us, and the One who called us to be His servants.

There is only one thing that matters in life: to know Jesus. Please help me share His Word here on Skid Row in Los Angeles.

Blessings,
