Present to God

Charles de Foucauld define his life like this: Present to God; Present to People.

I’ve heard many corporate and personal mission statements to identify passions and goals, but this one states how I would like to define my life.

Present to God: I once watched a Basque shepherd tending his sheep. When a sheep strayed, the shepherd pointed to the wayward sheep, and his dog would race in that direction – then suddenly stop to look back to get a second command. No words were spoken but the dog would drive the sheep wherever the shepherd’s hand directed.

Then the dog would then return to the shepherd’s side, sit, and wait for his next order. That dog was present to his master—ready to respond. In the same way, we must be present to God, ready to move at His command.

Present to God, quietly waiting on Him to hear His voice. He spoke to Job in a “faint whisper;” to Elijah God brought the wind, an earthquake and a fire, and then He spoke to Elijah in a whisper. I confess that waiting upon God is a challenge. I’m a doer. But I also confess that the most precious times in my life come when I wait upon Him to restore my soul and renew my strength.

Present to God, sensitive to His voice, obedient to His guidance, awaiting His command, like the shepherd’s faithful dog. That’s what I desire in my life. What about you? (Tomorrow we’ll look at the next three words, Present to People.)
