Quit Thinking About Yourself

People who are what he calls "self-involved" have more severe coronary artery disease than those who are more focused toward others, psychologist Larry Scherwitz found in a study.

Scherwitz studied 150 patients hospitalized either for suspected heart disease or after a heart attack. He monitored how often they used the pronouns "I, me, my, mine, or myself," and found that the patients with more severe disease made far more references to themselves, no matter their age, blood pressure, or Type A behavior.

One of the best things we can do for yourself is to stop thinking of ourselves all the time. Consider the needs of others. You'll be healthier, more fulfilled, and more of what Christ called you to be.

This is a Biblical principle, and if we are following Christ, our life will be all about service, and sacrifice, since He was the ultimate example of sacrificial love. Jesus Christ said: ". . . whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

A catchword in today's business world is "servant leadership." No one in history personified servant leadership more than Jesus, and He calls His followers to a life of service and sacrifice.

A man decided to join a certain church, and he said to the pastor, “I want to join because I want to be fed.” The pastor replied, “Well, that’s fine, but we all would be better off if you would take off your bib, and put on an apron!”

Perhaps the pastor was a bit hard on this man, but he wanted to make a point. The church is not a club in business for the benefit of the members. The church is a group of servants focused on others, especially the least, the lost, the lonely and the hurting.
