Spurgeon’s “Heating Plant”

Charles Spurgeon is called the “Prince of Preachers.” But Spurgeon considered himself a "man of prayer among a people of prayer."

Spurgeon knew that his success was a direct result of the prayers of his congregation. He often told people:

"I always give all the glory to God, but I do not forget that he gave me the privilege of ministering to a praying people . . . determined to storm the Celestial City by the might of intercession.”

Several college students were visiting London when they decided to go hear the famed Charles Haddon Spurgeon preach. Arriving at the huge church, a man greeted them and asked, "Gentlemen, would you like to see the heating plant of this church?" It was a hot July day, and the young men really weren’t interested, but they didn't want to offend the man, so they followed their guide down a stairway. He quietly opened a door, and whispered, "This is our heating plant."

Surprised, the students saw 700 people quietly bowed in prayer, seeking God’s blessings on the service that would soon begin. Softly closing the door, the gentleman introduced himself. He was none other than Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

I wonder if anyone could find the “heating plants” in our churches and ministries today? I’m honest to tell you that I urgently need your prayers for our ministries here on Skid Row in Los Angeles, for without the power of the Holy Spirit, all of our efforts are in vain.

Blessings,
