The Family Picnic for 5,000

When I was growing up, family picnics were a big thing, with dozens of aunts and uncles and cousins gathered around tables strung out end to end.

Pitchers of lemonade and iced tea, large platters of fried chicken, roast beef, hot biscuits, corn bread, vegetables and homemade desserts by the dozens! Just thinking about it makes me hungry!

When Jesus fed the thousands on the hillside, it was like a larger family picnic. They were listening to Jesus preach, and He became concerned that the people were hungry. He stopped and said, "Let's feed them." Friend, Christianity is not simply about spiritual matters. Jesus is also concerned about our physical needs.

Our faith is not placed in a mysterious God. Our God became a man who got hungry and thirsty. He has compassion for you and me. It’s His nature, the nature of God. Jesus says to us still, "Don’t send them away. You feed them."

The young entrepreneur had a sign on his desk that read, "Never promise them pie in the sky until you see the bakery truck coming down the street." I think Jesus would challenge that sign, just as surely as he challenged His disciples to feed the people.

Please join me in sharing Jesus, and feeding hungry people here on Skid Row in Los Angeles.

Blessings,

Willie Jordan
