The Personal Touch

Jerry Rice was the 1989 MVP of Super Bowl 23, the longtime star for the San Francisco 49ers, and one of the greatest receivers in the history of football. 

Jerry Rice didn’t play football ball at some legendary college, but instead, he played for Mississippi Valley State University, in Itta Bena, Mississippi. When someone asked why he attended a virtually unknown school, Rice said, "Out of all the big-time schools that tried to recruit me, Mississippi Valley was the only school to come to my house and give me a personal visit." 

The big-time schools recruited through cards, letters, and ads, but only one came to meet him and show Rice personal attention. The personal touch made the difference. 

When Jesus walked the shores of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother casting a net into the sea. He approached them and invited them to follow Him. He went a little further and he saw two more brothers: James and John. He talked with them, extending the same personal invitation, and they followed. 

The personal touch always makes the difference, whether recruiting a football player, or telling a lost soul about Jesus. 

YOU can learn to share your faith one-on-one here at the Mission, and on the streets of Skid Row. Pastors, I invite you to allow Fred Jordan Mission be the inner-city arm of your church. Bring your men’s and women’s groups, as well as your youth groups to the Mission, where they will have practical experience in sharing the gospel with lost, hurting souls, and they will also learn to serve “…the least of these.”
