What do you want on your Tombstone?

What inscription do you want chiseled on your tombstone under your name, the date of your birth and the date of your death?

Television personality Barbara Walters spent decades interviewing world leaders, sports figures and other celebrities, and frequently she asked the question: “How do you want to be remembered?”

The first answer that popped into my mind as I thought about this question was this: “Her children believed in her.”

I am the mother of seven children. Our children see us at our best, and they see us at our worst. And at the end of the day, I would like to believe that my children believed that I loved the Lord and served Him with every fiber of my being; that I loved and honored their father; that I loved them dearly, and that I had compassion for lost, hurting, needy souls.

From my youth I have sought to be like Jesus. Today, more than 70-years after I committed my life to Him, I am still challenged by 1 Peter l: “As obedient children, let yourselves be shaped by God’s life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness. God said, “I am holy; you be holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

But do our own children see my desire to be like Jesus? What do you want on your tombstone? I challenge you join me in living today like we want to be remembered tomorrow.

Most of my homeless friends don’t want to be remembered as they are today. Please help me bring them to Jesus. Please pray for us today on the streets of Los Angeles’ Skid Row, and here at the Mission.

Blessings,

Willie Jordan
