What’s Worth Keeping

The story is told of a man who loved old books. He met an acquaintance who had just thrown away some old things that had been stored in the attic of his ancestral home for generations, including an old Bible. “I couldn't read it,” the acquaintance explained. “Somebody named Guten-something had printed it.” Whoops! Stay with me as I tell you more.

"Not Gutenberg!" the book lover exclaimed in horror. "That Bible was one of the first books ever printed. Why, a copy just sold for over two million dollars!"

His friend was unimpressed as he answered, "Mine wouldn't have brought a dollar. Some fellow named Martin Luther had scribbled all over it in German."

This man treated as worthless that which was valuable. Esau made a similar deal, by selling his birthright to his twin brother, Jacob "for one morsel of food." He threw away his future because he couldn't control his immediate wants.

But God redeemed the situation and even redeemed Jacob, when He promised: “…the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants, and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and by you and all your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed...” This is the undeserved gift of God to His children, even to rascals like Jacob.

We share in these blessings through faith in God’s Son, Jesus. The Lord says, "Come, blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world ... Truly I say to you as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren you did it to me ..."
