God did not ask us to fix poverty

Almost daily, I have people and close friends say to me, “Joe, poverty and homelessness are running rampant. It’s too big to tackle, and we can’t make a difference!”

My response to them is, “God never asked us to fix poverty or eliminate the poor. Instead, He said, “For you have the poor with you always” (Mark 14:7).

My focus is not on how big the homelessness problem is but on reaching one person at a time. I am choosing to love them, share the gospel with them, and feed and clothe them.

Over 76 years ago, my father started doing that, and my mother joined him several years afterward. Now, three-quarters of a century later, I am continuing my dad’s vision and God’s calling to “Declare and Demonstrate the Love of Jesus.” In His Word, God calls us to love Him with all our heart, mind, and soul. Next, He commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves. We need to take that mandate seriously.

Who are our neighbors?

I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW AND LOOK BEYOND YOUR DOORSTEP. THINK ABOUT IT WHEN YOU ARE AT THE GROCERY STORE OR FILLING UP YOUR CAR WITH GAS. DO NOT TURN A BLIND EYE BUT GAZE AT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU.

We have all seen the man holding a sign that says, “Will work for food,” or the mom with her children asking for spare change. These people may not wear the same clothes you have on or drive a car needing gas. But these destitute people are who Jesus referred to as our neighbors. They are in our communities; they are our fellow citizens, and they are human beings like us – just in a deprived situation.

Here is how we reach them: One Soul at a Time. I pray daily for hurting, hopeless people and do what I can to ease their suffering. Will you join me in praying for them and being God’s extended hand in whatever capacity you can?

Next, I want you to help me impact and change lives daily in Los Angeles, the Coachella Valley, and everywhere in between.

September begins the most crucial time of need at Fred Jordan Missions because it launches the busiest months of the year. In the next four months, we will serve more people than we have in the last eight months, which is why I need your help!

Will you give today toward this endeavor?

Please give your most generous financial gift possible today. No gift is too small or too great. We put them all together to have the most significant impact on those we serve – One Soul at a Time.

God Bless You,
Joe Jordan
