“I don’t know you, but I love you.”

I am reaching out to you today with a profound and urgent call for support.

I want to introduce you to David Ramirez, a man with a heart full of compassion for those we serve on the streets of Skid Row and beyond. I first met David when he was 16 years old and volunteered as a drummer at one of our events in the Coachella Valley. Even then, his servant’s heart was evident. Now, more than 20 years later, he has spent his life dedicated to helping men, women, and children who have experienced homelessness—whether temporarily or in dire circumstances.

Today, David serves Jesus faithfully at Fred Jordan Missions. Recently, he shared this story with me that deeply moved my heart and underscored the critical need for our collective action.

On the streets of Skid Row, a man sought solace outside the doors of Fred Jordan Missions. His weary, frail figure was a painful reminder of the countless others facing similar trials—leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

He sat on the sidewalk, exhausted and in need of help. One of our ministry team members noticed him and stopped to assist. Though tired from a long day of serving, they offered him a cot near the Mission and the neighboring alley.

The day moved forward in its usual rhythm as we served hundreds of homeless souls who passed through our doors for nourishment and care.

But as evening fell and the Mission was ready to close, we noticed the man was still resting on the cot. Yet, something seemed different about him.

His skin was pale, and his hand was laying limp at his side. As we drew closer, reality hit hard—he had passed away. He was lifeless. No breath. His mouth was closed, and his pulse was gone.

The news of his sudden passing rippled through the Mission. Disbelief was etched on the faces of those who had seen him. His name was David, too, yet he had never been a regular at our doors.

But, on this particular day, something inexplicably drew him here. Had he sensed his time was near? Or was it the comfort he felt while lying down and listening to the Word of God echoing through our chapel speakers?

In the quiet aftermath, we prayed together as a staff. Tears filled the eyes of those who had spoken with him earlier, and one of our team members clung to David’s final words, which he whispered that morning as he sat down on the cot. It was a message that resonated as if Christ Himself had spoken:

“I don’t know you, but I love you.”
