More Children Are on the Streets Than Ever—They Need You

Today, I stood at the corner of Fred Jordan Missions on 5th Street and Towne Avenue and was transported back to my childhood—holding my father’s hand and walking these streets with my mother, Willie.

As I gazed up at the towering buildings that stand as silent witnesses to the heart-wrenching scenes below, my heart was stirred by the stark contrast between these streets 50 years ago and how drastically they have changed over the last two to three years.

Then I looked up at the Mission sign, a symbol of hope in these trying times and a radiant light that remains unquenchable.

These streets have become brutal, harsh, and even frightening. Amidst the chaos, my eyes fall upon families struggling to survive. I also do not remember seeing this many children in years past.

I am thankful that these families find their way to the welcoming doors of Fred Jordan Missions every week. They not only come for a hot meal or a box of groceries but a word of hope, prayer, and love found only in Jesus. Fred Jordan Missions truly becomes a sanctuary, a refuge amidst the chaos and uncertainty that surrounds them.

I am reminded of the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), where compassion and kindness transcend boundaries and urge us to extend a hand to those in need, regardless of their circumstances.

These Bible verses are our call to action and an opportunity to look beyond ourselves and support our neighbors with love and compassion.

The words of Matthew 25:40 echo in my heart: “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”

I hope and pray this Scripture motivates us to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual, knowing that they deserve our care and support.

Every small act of kindness, every meal shared, and every word of hope spoken at the Mission is a testament to our shared humanity. It reaffirms that compassion and hope continue to shine through.

Your small act of kindness matters deeply. No gift is too small, and no gift is too large.
