Immanuel, God with Us
“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Immanuel, a word we hear often during the Christmas season – in Christmas carols and on Christmas cards. Yet, I wonder if we’re aware of the impact of this word on our lives. Immanuel, God with us – the birth of Christ signals the beginning of God with us.
That night in the little town of Bethlehem, God stepped into "Time" – the Ancient of Days became the newborn baby in Judea. Immanuel – "God with us," "together with us." GOD, up close and personal.
Isaiah showed God’s divine plan nearly 1,000 years in advance, when he prophesied birth of Holy child, when he wrote: “The Lord himself will give you a sign; the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
God said: "This is when, where, and how I am going to do it." And He did it! Matthew, in writing about the birth 1000 years later, repeats God’s prophecy, “They will call him Immanuel"-- which means, "God with us."
Immanuel, one of the most beautiful names given to Jesus; Immanuel, God with us! This name takes the birth of the Christmas baby out of the realm of simply a sweet story, as some view it, and transforms the birth of Jesus into God’s Christmas miracle! The true meaning of that first Christmas is clear: God became flesh in the Person of Jesus Christ. HE IS CHRISTMAS!
Christmas is just days away, but there is still time to phone 1-844-FJM-FOOD to provide hot Christmas meals for the homeless, Christmas dinner food bags for families struggling to survive, blankets, warm clothes and even new toys for impoverished children.
There is still time to give. You can donate on our secure website www.fjm.org, or by phone at 1-844-FJM-FOOD. You can also mail a donation to PO Box 12345, Covina, CA, 91722.
