Kids Need Your Help

Dear Friend, 

September has always been one of my favorite months of the year. Why? 

It’s when football typically starts, which is a sport I played as a kid in high school and college. One of my dreams was to make a career out of playing football, but Jesus had a better plan for me. 

Also, summer was ending, and school was ready to start. I can almost smell the freshly cut grass and hear the crowds in the stands. 

Anticipation. Expectation. Exhilaration. This was the season I loved! 

It’s been well over 30 years since those days, and during those 30 plus years, there was another constant within this season – our annual “Back To School” giveaway on Skid Row. This is a time when we partner with great companies like Foot Locker to set kids up for their fall season of school.

Even though schools may not open everywhere this fall, kids will be continuing their education, whether in a classroom, online, or a combination of both. They will go “back to school,” and I want you to join me in providing the necessary tools and resources they need to feel great about themselves and succeed in learning.

The Bible says, “Be ready in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2a). This is what I will be doing. Though I don’t know the full circumstance of where each child will be, I want to be ready and treat this season as normal as possible. I want to provide them with new shoes, new clothes, school supplies, and backpacks – yes, backpacks – even if they carry them from their bedroom to the kitchen. Let’s provide them with whatever we can to help them feel normal.

Not only will we help provide their basic school needs, but I also want to meet their spiritual needs. I want them to learn about Jesus and how much He cares for them, loves them, and sees them in their time of hurt and isolation.

You may not preach, but you can pray – every one of us can pray. Whether you serve with us on Skid Row or pray from your home, commit to me, in this season, to pray.

Then, I humbly ask that you give, and please give as generously as possible. Your gifts will go towards our “Back To School” giveaway and help feed and clothe those on Skid Row daily.

I wish I could say with confidence, “Are you ready for some football?” But, just in case we don’t see a “kick-off” soon, I can guarantee you we will bring smiles and Jesus to those who have nothing.
